Basement Damp

In a rain storm over 1200 gallons of water can fall on and around your property?

Condensation-in-basement-Picture
(Without good positive drainage away from your home gutters and downspouts, water can find its way in and cause a damp basement. The water table below your home can rise when an over abundance of rain storms occur in a short amount of time.  If the water gets into the foundation walls, it is likely you will see discoloration or dark wet areas.

People can also have an adverse effect on a partially dry area.  Working out, doing laundry or having a full bathroom all can raise the humidity level.  Finished basements can hold even more moisture due to the material used.  Plastic sheeting and insulation can also increase that damp feeling.

The below grade temperature of soil remains at 55 degrees all year long.  If your put your hand on your basement wall you will notice it is cooler then the inside conditioned air.  During the summer when your doors or windows are open the humid air can get to your lower levels. When this  moisture comes into contact with the colder cement blocks it can actually look like waterproofing maybe needed.  Concrete floors can also wick water from the saturated dirt below.

Foundation cracks can also allow humid air to settle in the basement.  If it is a leaky crack below the earth then we recommend sealing it.  Dampness can also cause mold to flourish.  Small box store dehumidifiers cannot keep up with most in home humidity problems.  What we recommend is finding the actual causes of the damp basement and correcting these issues.  If they aren't remedied first finishing or using the space will lead to health problems.  Another huge annoyance is the rotting smells that can come from your cellar or crawlspace.  Many times this is mycotoxins being release from mold spores.  It can also be the smell of decaying organic materials that have gotten wet over the months or years.  As you can see there are many ways water can cause moist conditions in your home. Give us a call to implement a solution for your basement damp proofing.
